Homemade Fabric Softener (DIY)

I did it!  I made homemade fabric softener. 🙂

I was inspired by my friend Catherine’s blog post a while back.  I used the exact same ingredients she did, but I made 1/2 her recipe because I wanted to make sure I liked it.

Fabric Softener

1 cup hot water

1/4 cup vinegar

1/3 cup conditioner

(Like Catherine, I used Suave conditioner because it’s relatively inexpensive.  I had coupons for it, too, making it very cheap!  Unfortunately, those coupons are no longer available or I would certainly share!)

Directions:

Pour ingredients together in a container or bottle and shake or stir to mix.  Since I didn’t have a really big storage bottle I actually mixed mine in a pan and then poured it into a spray bottle as well as an empty soup bottle.

I can’t wait to try it out!

Do any of you have experience with homemade fabric softener or dryer sheets?

I am hoping to be able to use the green spray bottle of fabric softener to spray onto a washcloth and use as a dryer sheet.  Does anyone know how well this works?

This is so inexpensive; I hope I like it!!

I'm Bonnie. I'm a pharmacy technician and new wife to Bogdan. I love cooking, usually without recipes. I love good sales and coupons, but haven't quite figured out the best way to find them. I make the typical new-wife mistakes and have burned my share of cookies. I like a cold house and a hot shower all year long.

I’ve been making this for a little while now & love it! I tried spraying on a washcloth and it worked ok, but I prefer using it in the washer.

I haven’t tried the spray on cloth method yet, but I do like it in the wash. 🙂

This is great! How much do you add to the wash? I love fabric softener, but not a huge fan of the prices- this is a great solution!

    • That is a good question. 🙂
I have not used this fabric softener in a load of clothes in the washer yet. I have used it in the dryer, however!
I put it in a spray bottle and after I toss the clothes in the dryer I spray overtop/on them – about 10 sprays or so? So it’s hard to say. 🙂
      It worked really well, though!
